Project Introduction A Seizure Management Application to Hosting Patient-Specific Seizure Action Plans for Rapid and Effective Care

BackgroundThe Digital Lab and BC Children’s Hospital Division of Neurology developed the Seizure Action Plan (SAP) application. Approximately 1 in 100 people in Canada, many being children, live with epilepsy which can cause seizures. Seizures occur because of altered brain activity and cause patients to lose consciousness and move uncontrollably. When patients experience seizures they are provided a physical document of their patient-specific seizure action plan developed by their neurology team to guide treatment of subsequent seizures. While following these plans to seizure care, as the action plans are physical documents it is common for them not to be accessible. To ensure lifesaving care can be provided to patients, the Seizure Action Plan application was developed.

Previous Design

The existing website featured a bulky design, cluttered layouts, and excessively vibrant colors that distracted users. This prompted not only a visual refresh but also a more user-friendly layout overhaul to enhance overall usability.

New Design

Hi-Fidelity Wireframes Healthcare providers can access a wider variaty of information on this platform only viewable through desktop, including Patient Database, Medication Database, nad Clinic Care Team. This is the main interface they will be interacting with.

Conclusion
&Reflection
The SAP application has transformed seizure care for clinicians and patients. It lets clinicians create and update individualized seizure action plans, improving treatment and response times. By securely storing plans and efficiently distributing them to schools and caregivers, it overcomes previous accessibility challenges, empowering both patients and their support networks. Moreover, changes are tracked with timestamps, ensuring evolving care plans remain accurate and up-to-date. As a result, this tool has significantly enhanced care quality and patient outcomes.
